At home in the city

MG_0563.jpg

We've lived here two months and I realized I haven't shared a little tour of corners of our downtown space. We love it; it's exactly the kind of home we want and need for this phase of life. It's all in one big area; if pieces look like they are right next to each other, they are.

Living room, dining space behind it, and Beatrix the cat. We always eat either at the high counter or the sofa, so the dining room table is for having friends over or projects. I hung almost all the art where there were already giant, immovable nails in the brick, which means, they are where they are--a bit random. Other big pieces are just propped, like my lady there.

Bedroom, with a Japan print of Ben's. His Dad made the frame, and mounted the hanging wire the wrong direction from what Ben asked for, which means, until we change it, Japan hangs sideways. That is also Ben's crocheted dinosaur head, an Etsy find. Quilt made by me.

Reading nook, a.k.a. Avery's corner, with our assorted, combined art pieces

My desk/office/sewing corner. My desk butts up against Ben's larger one, making a perfect little office space. My ironing board is also a perfect computer perch, for when the sewing machine is dominating the desktop. There is so much light in this apartment, I almost feel guilty.

This is Ben's desk, made from the wood from a train car by local artist Rough South Home. His double monitors fade quite nicely into the office corner of the house, and he agreed with me after a week living here that no, we did not in fact need three flatscreen TVs in one giant space. We have two. His desk is really awesome and he picked well.

The chest was a gift from Ben's Dad; that's my awesome, extra-long yoga mat, at the ready.

Got to love a $10 sofa. Low, long, and midcentury, too--I didn't even have to compromise traits I love in a couch. The credit for finding it goes entirely to my Mom. She found it at the church garage sale in Dublin, Ga. Pillows made by me.

A boy's prize possession: weapon hanging on the wall. It is a beautiful, artful axe, especially with its tiny little daily reminder (Courage).

Kitchen, counter where we hang out a lot, bed peeking out, and door to the bathroom. The newspaper hanging on the frig is the Atlanta Journal-Constitution with us pictured in our apartment as part of a cover story. The sailboat painting and frame is one of my favorites taken from my parents when they downsized.

I love this mirror but struggled to find a place to hang it, because it's so heavy and the brick is so hard to drill nails into. I thought I had run out of wall space, when my Mom reminded me of the height options we have in this space. Of course, I'll go up! Now it is perched on top our kitchen cabinets, reflecting more light and showing another angle of the ceilings.

Ceiling when you're in our tiny little "hallway" headed towards the bathroom or the closet.

Urban bathroom fixtures: concrete countertop and metal shelves. I adore my garden tub, which has a great view of the train tracks from the window as well. Requisite National Geographics stacked nearby.

Bright, airy art (prints of Rome cityscapes) in the bright bathroom.
